COURSE CURRICULUM

The Operating Department Practice (ODP) program is structured over three years to develop competent, confident, and autonomous practitioners in perioperative care. In the first year, students focus on building foundational knowledge and skills, covering the basics of surgical and anaesthetic practice, anatomy, physiology, and applied sciences. They also explore holistic patient care, health promotion, and strategies to develop confidence in operating department practice. The second year advances these skills, with students deepening their understanding of surgical, anaesthetic, and post-anaesthetic care while studying advanced physiology, pathophysiology, and pharmacology. This year also emphasizes research and evidence-based practice, professional, legal, and ethical considerations, and informed decision-making in complex clinical situations. In the third year, the program shifts toward advanced and specialized practice, including critical care, leadership, change management, and improvement in healthcare. Students also learn to facilitate learning, supervise, and assess others within perioperative practice. The final year focuses on achieving autonomy in clinical practice, preparing students to function independently and confidently within multidisciplinary teams. Throughout the course, there is a strong emphasis on integrating theory with practical experience, reflective practice, and professional development, ensuring graduates are equipped to provide safe, effective, and compassionate care in surgical and perioperative environments.
