COURSE CURRICULUM

The Nursing (Mental Health) degree equips students to provide comprehensive, person-centred care for individuals with mental health needs, combining theoretical learning with extensive practical experience. In the first year, students gain a solid foundation in essential nursing practice, including professional approaches, physiology, social sciences, and the interaction between mental and physical health. Modules focus on assessing needs, creating therapeutic opportunities, promoting holistic health and wellbeing, understanding safeguarding and legislation, and developing practical skills through 787.5 hours of hands-on clinical practice. In the second year, students build on this knowledge by enhancing assessment and evidence-based interventions, applying therapeutic approaches, collaborating across specialisms, and integrating person-centred care. They also explore professional, legal, and ethical issues, develop assertiveness and decision-making skills, and evaluate care using research methodologies and quality improvement principles. The final year emphasises advanced therapeutic interventions, care for complex conditions, leadership and management of quality services, and preparation for prescribing and communication strategies. Students also develop skills as educators, learning to provide feedback, deliver presentations, and support lifelong learning. By the end of the degree, graduates consolidate their clinical, supervisory, and leadership skills, becoming confident, competent, and ready for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, prepared to deliver safe, holistic, and effective mental health care across diverse settings.
