COURSE CURRICULUM

The Forensic Science degree provides a structured and in-depth approach to understanding the role of science in criminal investigations, taking students from the basics of analysis to advanced specialist applications. In the first year, students are introduced to forensic analysis, crime scene investigation, and forensic awareness, while also developing essential laboratory and academic skills. Core scientific foundations are established through modules such as chemistry for forensic science and genetics and evolution, equipping students with the knowledge required for later study. The second year builds on this foundation with a focus on evidence interpretation, volume scene examination, and the forensic examination of human remains, while specialist modules in human molecular genetics, forensic biology, microbiology, and modern analytical techniques highlight the scientific complexity of the field. Students also begin to explore specific pathways in analytical and biological forensics, applying these to practical casework scenarios. In the final year, emphasis shifts to professional preparation and advanced application. Students undertake a research project to showcase their expertise and engage with modules in applied forensic toxicology, advanced analytical techniques, and environmental and wildlife forensics. Training in forensic casework and expert witness testimony ensures graduates are prepared for roles in forensic labs, law enforcement, or scientific research.
