COURSE CURRICULUM

The Criminology with Youth Justice degree provides an in-depth exploration of crime, justice, and the psychological and social factors affecting young people in the justice system. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge of the criminal justice system, crime and deviance, contemporary crime challenges, and research methods, alongside modules on diversity, victim experiences, and professional development to prepare for practical engagement in the field. The second year focuses on youth crime, juvenile justice, and safeguarding, while also covering serious, organised, and transnational crime, violent offences, and substance misuse. Students develop practical skills through work experience and research projects, applying theoretical insights to real-world situations. In the third year, students deepen their understanding of working with young people and young adults within justice settings, examining trauma, youth offending, and effective interventions. Advanced modules cover prisons, probation, resettlement, homicide, domestic abuse, and sexual violence, enabling students to critically evaluate criminal justice responses and prevention strategies. An optional dissertation allows independent research into topics of particular interest. Throughout the program, there is a strong emphasis on ethical practice, reflective learning, and professional development. Graduates leave with analytical, research, and practical skills, equipped for careers in youth justice, policing, probation, social work, offender rehabilitation, policy development, or further study in criminology and related fields.
