COURSE CURRICULUM

The History degree offers students a wide-ranging exploration of past societies, cultures, and events while developing critical thinking and research skills. In the first year, students are introduced to historical study through core modules such as Introduction to History, alongside topics including crime and lowlife in nineteenth-century Britain, the making of modern Europe through nations and empires, and the Atlantic world’s role in shaping global connections. They also examine themes such as science, magic, and medicine in early modern Europe and Germany’s memory and identity in public history. The second year encourages deeper engagement with specific themes and includes a workplace reflection module to connect academic learning with professional skills. Topics studied range from women in modern Britain and witchcraft in early modern Europe to poverty and welfare through history, the global nuclear age, and the political and cultural world of the Tudors. In the final year, students undertake an independent dissertation supported by advanced thematic modules. These include global frontiers, the legacy of empire and race in Britain, urban scandal and vice in reformation Europe, and postwar Britain’s social and political debates. By graduation, students gain a strong grasp of historical interpretation, evidence analysis, and communication, preparing them for diverse career paths.
