COURSE CURRICULUM

The Film degree is structured to build creative, technical, and theoretical expertise across three years, preparing students for careers in the screen industry. In the first year, students are introduced to both documentary and fiction filmmaking, learning to tell stories through practical projects while developing technical skills in camera, lighting, sound, and postproduction. They also study film theory in the module What is Film?, exploring cinema’s cultural, social, and political roles, and gain foundational skills in screenwriting, producing, and directing. The second year emphasizes experimentation and global perspectives. Students explore documentary film history and theory, global cinema, and film as philosophical and artistic expression, while advancing their technical knowledge through studio-based workshops and continuity shoots. They also work on collaborative projects with real-world clients, creating commercial, promotional, or social action films. In the final year, focus shifts to advanced storytelling and professional practice. Students develop, fund, and produce a graduation film to festival standards, supported by modules in advanced craft and engagement. They also have the option to undertake a dissertation or critical report, combining theory with research or reflective practice. The year concludes with career preparation, ensuring graduates are equipped with industry-ready skills, portfolios, and professional strategies.
