COURSE CURRICULUM

The documentary photography course is designed to develop both creative and professional skills across three years, enabling students to become confident visual storytellers. In the first year, students are introduced to the foundations of documentary practice through field trips, collaborative projects, and technical training with cameras and printing facilities. They explore the role of the photographer as an observer, creating impactful images on social issues, while also learning narrative techniques such as sequencing, editing, and structuring long-form stories. The year further develops digital storytelling skills through moving-image, sound, and editing, alongside exploring key themes, debates, and contexts that shape the role of photography in social change and advocacy. The second year focuses on professional applications, with students producing their own exhibitions, creating and binding photobooks, and gaining knowledge of the documentary industries. Research and theory are also emphasized, connecting photography with wider fields like film, fashion, and advertising to deepen practice. In the third year, students work on independent projects through negotiated practices and live briefs, developing a final portfolio for exhibition or publication. Alongside this, they prepare for careers in the creative industries by studying business practice, marketing, and professional strategies.
