COURSE CURRICULUM

The Empowerment and Discrimination: Skills for Practice module (15 credits) focuses on deepening students' understanding of discrimination and the professional values integral to social work. Students will learn to recognize personal and organizational discrimination within social work settings and explore ways to challenge it, with a strong emphasis on legislative requirements. The module encourages collaboration with individuals who use social work services, allowing students to gather lived experiences and promote rights that reduce experiences of discrimination.The Legal and Policy Frameworks for Social Work module (30 credits) provides a comprehensive understanding of the current policies, legislation, and historical practices that shape social work. Students will identify key statutes and policy frameworks, critically analyzing how they influence social work legislation and practice. The module also delves into ethical considerations in social work, enabling students to evaluate the relationships between various legal frameworks and social work practice.The MSc Social Work Practice Placement 1 (30 credits) module gives students the opportunity to apply theory to practice during a 70-day placement. This experience helps students build core capabilities needed for professional practice. Reflecting on user feedback and creating a portfolio of evidence, students will demonstrate how they meet the Professional Capabilities Framework. The placement solidifies students' abilities to bridge theory with practice and prepares them for future social work roles.Social Work Theory and Evidence (15 credits) is an introductory module that allows students to explore various theories, methods, and the evidence base for social work practice. It develops critical analysis skills, helping students reflect on different interventions and their professional development. The module provides a foundational understanding of human development models, equipping students with the necessary tools for future practice.
