COURSE CURRICULUM
In the Advanced Materials module (20 credits), you will investigate high-performance materials used in engineering applications. You will employ numerical and analytical methods to evaluate advanced alloys, ceramics, and composites, assessing their suitability for design purposes. This module will help you build expertise in materials science, laying the foundation for careers in quality control, design, and research and development. The Computational Fluid Dynamics module (20 credits) focuses on solving complex problems in thermofluid mechanics using professional software. You will learn to use computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software to model and analyze fluid flow situations, gaining a deep understanding of the numerical methods used in CFD studies while evaluating the software's potential and limitations. The Control Systems module (20 credits) equips you with the skills to design control systems that meet performance specifications in fields such as automation and robotics. You will apply in-depth knowledge to analyze complex design specifications, propose solutions, and use computer-aided engineering (CAE) tools to simulate and solve industrial control issues. In the Energy Systems module (20 credits), you will develop skills in the design and analysis of heat transfer and combustion systems. The module covers modeling and analyzing heat transfer modes, evaluating operational and design variables, and considering fuel types and environmental effects. You will also learn to employ LMTD and NTU methods for heat exchanger sizing, demonstrating technical competency and societal awareness. The Structural Application of Finite Elements module (20 credits) teaches you to understand the theoretical and practical implications of finite element analyses. You will design mechanical components, perform static, modal, and eigen buckling analyses, and evaluate the viability of finite element models for engineering components. The module aims to build your ability to simulate, assess, and improve engineering designs. The Structural Integrity module (20 credits) focuses on applying engineering science to determine integrity risks in structures. You will explore methods such as fracture mechanics and fatigue analysis to predict damage tolerance and lifespan, assessing designs for failure modes. Finally, the Individual Project (MSc) module (60 credits) allows you to select and manage a project where you will solve an engineering problem. This involves researching the subject, investigating existing solutions, devising and implementing a solution, and testing and evaluating your proposal. The project will showcase your technical skills, and your performance will be assessed both orally and in writing.
