COURSE CURRICULUM

The program offers a comprehensive suite of modules that develop key skills in geographical information science and remote sensing, providing students with a strong foundation for careers in the field. Applied GIS and Remote Sensing (30 credits) equips students with practical skills in GIS and remote sensing, including data collection, image classification, field surveying, and report writing, reinforced by fieldwork experience. The GIS Programming Essentials (30 credits) module focuses on developing proficiency in programming languages such as Python and SQL, essential for modern GIS applications, preparing students for technical roles in the industry. Principles of GIScience (30 credits) introduces the fundamental concepts of GIS, including map projections, coordinate systems, and spatial data models. Students gain hands-on experience using GIS software, strengthening their understanding of the technical aspects of GIS. In the Research Skills and Project (60 credits) module, students apply their research skills by conducting independent projects, including hypothesis formulation, data collection, analysis, and the preparation of a comprehensive thesis report. Finally, Terrain Evaluation and Natural Hazards (30 credits) provides an in-depth study of geological and environmental hazards, focusing on terrain evaluation methods. Students engage in field-based techniques to assess natural hazards and design risk management or remediation schemes, reporting their findings through written reports and academic articles. Together, these modules offer students both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in GIS, remote sensing, and environmental hazard analysis, preparing them for professional roles in geographical sciences.
