COURSE CURRICULUM

The Research Preparation module (60 credits) is a foundational element of the MRes Science program, designed to equip students with essential research skills and knowledge specific to their chosen field. Throughout the module, students will engage in meetings with their supervisor, attend research seminars, and participate in workshop sessions to enhance their understanding of the subject matter. A key component of the module is the development of a project proposal, where students will critically analyze existing literature, design research protocols, and ensure ethical compliance. This preparatory phase allows students to interpret their findings, address their research needs, and establish a solid foundation for their future research work.The MRes Science Research Project (120 credits) is a significant part of the program that offers students the opportunity to actively engage in scientific research. The module encourages the collection and analysis of new, high-quality data that can contribute to the field and be suitable for publication. As early-career researchers, students will foster a curiosity-driven attitude while gaining deep knowledge of their subject area. They will develop practical expertise in their research setting—whether it be laboratory-based, fieldwork, or online—and learn how to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a research team. Throughout the project, students will refine their skills in communicating their findings effectively through written and spoken formats. This includes preparing a research conference poster, engaging in a career interview, submitting a draft manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal, and delivering a research conference presentation. By the end of the module, students will have a comprehensive understanding of the research process and the ability to contribute significantly to scientific knowledge in their chosen field.
