COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1, you will study two core modules. The first module, Second Language Acquisition (30 credits), delves into the theories and practices surrounding how second and additional languages are learned. You will explore leading theories and models that explain successful language learning, focusing on the influence of social, cultural, and linguistic environments. The module encourages you to reflect on your own language learning experiences to reconsider teaching practices. Additionally, you will gain tools to assess multilingual language policies and program designs, grounded in evidence-based practices for various educational contexts, such as dual language, English Language Learners (ELL), and foreign language education.The second module, Theory and Practice of TESOL (30 credits), aims to bridge the gap between theoretical understanding and practical application in the teaching of English. You will examine how language learning theories can be applied in the classroom, with a focus on the context of teaching English. The module covers planning effective lessons, activities, and courses, as well as strategies for motivating learners and adapting to different classroom situations.In Year 2, you will complete the Professional Experience module (120 credits), which involves 8-10 months of practical work experience in your chosen career field. This immersive module provides the opportunity to apply everything you've learned during the course in a real-world setting. You will be responsible for securing your own internship or work placement with support from the Placement and Careers teams, and you will gain valuable professional connections and employability skills, helping you prepare for life after graduation.
