COURSE CURRICULUM

Core modules for this year include Psychology of Language Learning and Teaching (30 credits) and Theory and Practice of TESOL (30 credits). These modules provide students with an in-depth understanding of how language is acquired and taught, examining both theoretical frameworks and practical applications in teaching English to speakers of other languages.Psychology of Language Learning and Teaching focuses on the cognitive, emotional, and social processes involved in learning a second language. Students will explore the psychological factors that influence language learning, such as motivation, memory, and learning styles. This knowledge will be essential in understanding how to support diverse learners in the language classroom effectively.Theory and Practice of TESOL covers the theoretical foundations of teaching English to speakers of other languages, alongside practical approaches for effective language instruction. Students will learn about various teaching methodologies and techniques, such as communicative language teaching, task-based learning, and content-based instruction. The module also emphasizes the importance of adapting teaching methods to meet the needs of different learners in a variety of contexts.Optional modules for this year include Second Language Acquisition (30 credits), which explores how learners acquire a second language, and World Englishes (30 credits), which examines the global variations of English and their impact on teaching. Analysing, Evaluating and Writing Materials (30 credits) offers students the opportunity to develop their skills in creating and evaluating teaching materials, while Using Language Corpora for Teaching and Research (30 credits) teaches students how to use corpus linguistics tools in both teaching and research contexts.The English Language Teaching Project (30 credits) allows students to undertake an independent project, applying their learning to a practical teaching context. Finally, the Dissertation (60 credits) offers students the chance to conduct original research in an area of interest within the field of TESOL, synthesizing theoretical and practical knowledge gained throughout the course.
