COURSE CURRICULUM
In Year 1 of this psychology program, students begin by gaining insight into human and animal behaviour through modules like Animal Behaviour, where they explore the evolutionary causes of behaviour and learn to place human psychology in the broader context of comparative psychology. The Applying Psychological Research Skills module focuses on developing research skills, including data analysis techniques and report writing conventions, allowing students to apply their skills in both qualitative and quantitative research. Exploring Psychology introduces essential topics in psychology and builds core skills for research, communication, and literature review. The Perspectives in Psychology module delves into the different historical, conceptual, and methodological approaches in psychology, including how these perspectives explain and treat mental illnesses.In Year 2, students dive deeper into psychological theories and methods. The Biological and Cognitive Psychology module focuses on understanding the biological basis of behaviour and the cognitive processes underlying perception, memory, and emotions. Individual Differences and Psychometrics explores intelligence and personality assessments, including the use of psychometric tests. The Professional Development and Employability module helps students transition from university to work, offering experiential learning pathways in psychology, research, work-based learning, or social enterprise. Psychological Research Methods builds practical skills in designing and analysing psychological studies, while Quantitative Data Analysis equips students with the ability to design, analyse, and interpret psychological data using statistical methods. Social and Developmental Psychology introduces key concepts in social and developmental psychology, connecting theoretical findings to real-world applications.Year 3 modules are offered through a partnership with Edith Cowan University and include a wide range of optional modules. Some of the available modules include Aboriginal Australians in the Criminal Justice System, Advanced Methods of Psychological Inquiry, Mental Health and Psychological Interventions, Culture and Diversity in Therapeutic Practice, Social Work and Mental Health, Working With Groups, and more. Students can choose from these to further specialize in areas of interest.Finally, Year 4 includes an optional module, offering students the flexibility to tailor their studies according to their career goals or academic interests.
