COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science degree at the University of Portsmouth provides students with a comprehensive understanding of biomechanics, physiology, and psychology as they relate to sport and exercise. In the first year, students are introduced to the fundamental principles of sport and exercise biomechanics, physiology, and psychology. Through modules like Introduction to Sport and Exercise Biomechanics, students learn how to apply Newton's Laws, angular momentum, and other biomechanical principles to improve performance and reduce injury risk. In Introduction to Sport and Exercise Physiology, students examine the systems that affect human performance, including musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems, and develop the skills to collect and analyze physiological data. The Introduction to Sport and Exercise Psychology module explores psychological theories and their application in sport and exercise settings, teaching students to integrate theory with data collection and analysis.In the second year, the focus shifts to more advanced topics. The Advanced Exercise Physiology module investigates the cardio-pulmonary and metabolic responses to exercise, as well as the psychological factors that may limit performance. The Biomechanics of Sport and Exercise module deepens students’ understanding of how biomechanical principles are applied to assess injury risk and performance, using current technologies to collect and analyze data. The Psychology of Sport and Exercise module further explores psychological factors that impact athletic performance and mental health, providing students with the tools to critically assess literature and apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios.The final year culminates in the Project module, where students design and complete an individual research project. This project allows students to apply the knowledge and skills they've gained throughout the course, from literature review and research question formulation to data analysis and presentation. Students work independently and in teams, and are required to communicate their findings effectively through written reports and poster presentations. This module is an opportunity for students to showcase their ability to carry out scientific research and contribute to the field of sport and exercise science.
