COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1, you will begin by laying a solid foundation in computer science and its key areas. The Data Structures and Algorithms module is key for understanding how to implement essential data structures like lists, trees, and graphs, with a focus on optimizing algorithms. Database Principles takes a deeper dive into relational database design, teaching you advanced skills like data modeling, transaction analysis, and SQL optimization. The Individual Project (Engineering) is a substantial, independent project where you’ll apply your knowledge to solve real-world problems, involving literature analysis, design, testing, and project management. Complex Problem Solving challenges you to work as part of a team to tackle an industry partner's brief, providing you with the opportunity to create a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) while applying team-based problem-solving approaches. Lastly, Software Engineering Culture offers insights into the software engineering industry, reviewing its history, key developments, and the skills needed to succeed in modern ICT environments. This year will prepare you for professional work or further study, rounding out your understanding of software engineering and computing.
