COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of your sociology program, you will explore key sociological concepts and methodologies that will lay the foundation for your studies. The Developing Your Sociological Imagination module introduces you to the power of sociological thinking, helping you challenge common assumptions and view contemporary issues through a sociological lens. In the Observing Society module, you'll critically engage with films and documentaries, learning how visual media reflects and shapes societal values, norms, and policies. The Research Design and Analysis module equips you with the tools to conduct sociological research, teaching both qualitative and quantitative methods to gather, analyze, and ethically present data. In Social Inequalities, you'll examine the structures of power, privilege, and inequality that define societal divisions, exploring the intersectionality of race, gender, and class. Finally, Theorising Social Life delves into the theories that have shaped our understanding of society, identity, and social change, providing you with a deeper understanding of social structures and their impact on individual lives.In Year 2, you will build upon these foundational modules with more hands-on research experience and a deeper examination of societal issues. The Doing Sociological Research module offers you the opportunity to conduct a research project in a small group, helping you develop practical skills in data collection and analysis. Work, Employment and Society will take you through the historical and contemporary theories of work, labour, and employment, providing insights into shifting workplace dynamics and the impact of social divisions. Modernity and Globalisation explores the global forces that have shaped the modern world, emphasizing the challenges and opportunities presented by global interconnectedness. Finally, the Risk and Society module examines how risks are perceived and managed in society, allowing you to apply sociological theory to issues such as health, crime, and technology. These modules will help you further develop critical thinking and research skills, preparing you for more specialized study in your final year.
