COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of your criminology and sociology program, you will gain foundational knowledge in both disciplines. The Criminal Justice module offers a comprehensive overview of national and international criminal justice systems, exploring their history, structure, and the various types of punishment used today. Developing Your Sociological Imagination will encourage you to critically analyze contemporary issues and challenge common assumptions, helping you build essential research and analytical skills for your degree. The Research Design and Analysis module provides practical training in both qualitative and quantitative research methods, teaching you how to collect, analyze, and ethically present sociological data. Through the Theorising Social Life module, you will engage with classic and modern social theories, gaining a deeper understanding of identity, society, and social change. Finally, the Understanding Criminology module takes you through the historical development of criminology, examining the social, political, and economic factors that influenced the emergence of this field of study.In Year 2, you will further develop your research skills through the Doing Sociological Research module, where you will collaborate with peers to design and conduct a research project. You will gain valuable experience in data collection, analysis, and presentation, while learning how sociological research contributes to various fields. The Questioning Criminology module invites you to critically evaluate criminology as a social science, delving into the role of social control, justice, and resistance in shaping societal norms. These modules will provide a solid foundation for understanding criminological and sociological theories and practices, preparing you for deeper exploration in your final year.
