COURSE CURRICULUM

Year 1: The first year of this program introduces the foundational concepts and skills required for a successful career in construction and surveying. The CAD and BIM module (20 credits) focuses on the principles of computer-aided design (CAD) and building information modelling (BIM), teaching you to use tools like Revit for 3D architectural and structural modelling, enabling you to communicate design ideas and visualize buildings effectively. The Construction Design and Sustainability module (20 credits) helps you understand basic building design, sustainable construction principles, and the environmental challenges associated with residential and commercial property design. In the Introduction to Construction Measurement module (20 credits), you'll learn techniques for the quantification and measurement of construction works, a critical skill for a quantity surveyor. The Introduction to Law for the Built Environment module (20 credits) provides a foundation in the English legal system, focusing on tort and contract law as they apply to the construction industry. The Multidisciplinary Project module (20 credits) fosters teamwork and professionalism, giving you hands-on experience working on a construction project using the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) plan of work. The Property Economics and Financial Accounting module (20 credits) focuses on the economic factors influencing the real estate sector, helping you understand investment characteristics and financial operations in property.Year 2: The second year builds on these foundations with a deeper focus on practical skills and project management. The Applied BIM module (20 credits) teaches you how to use BIM in multi-disciplinary, collaborative environments, applying it to tasks such as scheduling, costing, and energy analysis. In the Introduction to Project Management Principles module (20 credits), you’ll learn the basic principles and processes involved in managing construction projects. The Procurement and Pre-Contract Practice module (20 credits) introduces you to the procurement process, cost planning, and risk management in construction, using the RIBA Plan of Work to understand the various stages of a construction project. The Professional Studies and Applied Project module (20 credits) allows you to integrate knowledge from other modules and apply it to a real-world construction scenario. The Tender Documentation and Measurement module (20 credits) focuses on the preparation and interpretation of tender documentation, essential for effective project costing and contract management.Year 3: In the final year, you’ll focus on advanced topics in surveying and construction management. The Application of IT in Measurement and Tender Documentation module (20 credits) explores how technology speeds up measurement and tendering processes, teaching you to use digital tools to prepare bills of quantities. The Contract Administration, Claims Management and Dispute Resolution module (20 credits) examines contract administration, addressing issues related to project progress, delays, and dispute resolution. The Individual Major Project module (40 credits) requires you to undertake an in-depth investigation into a specific surveying problem, applying critical analysis and surveying principles to develop a solution. The Professional Practice module (20 credits) focuses on your personal development as a Chartered Surveyor, including ethical practice and career planning. Finally, the Quantity Surveying Practice module (20 credits) allows you to apply your knowledge to post-contract duties, including cost advice, valuations, and managing variations and claims within construction projects.
