COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biological Sciences program offers a comprehensive curriculum, starting with Year 1 modules that introduce students to the core concepts of biology, such as biodiversity, cell biology, marine ecology, and microbiology. Students explore topics like evolutionary processes, cell structure, and molecular biology, with practical laboratory experience in experimental techniques. The Graduate Employability Skills module helps students build essential skills, including communication, problem-solving, and numeracy, to prepare for future careers in science. Throughout the first year, students are encouraged to apply their theoretical knowledge in a range of practical scenarios, such as analyzing field data and conducting experiments.In Year 2, the focus shifts towards field-based ecological skills and the study of marine organisms and ecosystems. Modules like "Marine and Terrestrial Field Ecology" and "Marine Organisms and Ecosystems" help students apply ecological theory to real-world data collection and analysis. Additionally, the Research Skills module prepares students for independent research by teaching them how to design experiments, assess risks, and analyze biological data.Year 3 offers more specialized modules, including "Fisheries and Aquaculture" and "Marine Ecology and Conservation," which explore the impacts of human activity on marine ecosystems and the strategies used for their conservation. The "Marine Ecophysiology" module delves into how environmental changes affect marine organisms' physiological processes. The program culminates in a substantial research project, where students design and carry out a study in their chosen field, contributing to their development as independent researchers and professionals in biological sciences.
