COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the Environmental Science program, students will develop a foundational understanding of Earth and environmental systems. The Analysis of the Earth and Environment module introduces the numerical, chemical, and physical properties of the Earth, encouraging students to explore the planet as an integrated system. In Ecology, Plants and Human Impact, students learn ecological principles and the environmental consequences of human activity, focusing on plant roles in ecosystems. The Environmental Processes and Hazards module explores the operation of physical environmental systems, including natural hazards and their connections to human intervention. Students also investigate global environmental challenges, analyzing how population trends, resource use, and environmental change intersect through case studies in the Global Environmental Challenges module.The How the Earth Works module delves into the Earth's 4.5 billion-year history, examining the processes that shape the planet, from plate tectonics to the formation of mountain ranges. Introduction to Marine Ecology and Oceanography explores the marine environment, focusing on the physical, chemical, and biological processes that govern oceans and marine life. In Year 2, students build on this knowledge with modules such as Environmental Chemistry and Monitoring, where they learn about toxins and pollution, and Environmental Fieldwork and Professional Skills, which provides practical experience through overseas fieldwork. The Research Skills module enhances students' ability to plan and analyze scientific research.In Year 3, the Environmental Assessment and Management module prepares students to assess environmental impacts and perform environmental audits, while Environmental Pollution and Waste Management explores the science behind pollution and waste management. Finally, the Research Project module allows students to carry out an independent research project, honing their ability to analyze and communicate scientific findings in their chosen field of study.
