This criminology program offers a comprehensive approach to understanding crime, criminal justice, and criminological theory, providing students with the tools needed to critically analyze and engage with contemporary issues. In Year 1, foundational modules like Crime and Society introduce the relationship between crime and social issues, while Criminal Justice covers the history and development of criminal justice systems. The Essential Skills for Criminologists module builds key academic abilities, including research and critical thinking, while Psychology for Criminologists offers insight into how psychological theories are applied to criminal justice, such as in offender treatment and policing. Understanding Criminology provides an overview of the discipline’s origins and its evolution through history.Year 2 focuses on expanding critical thinking and research abilities, with modules such as Questioning Criminology, where students explore the criticisms and challenges of criminology as a social science, and Comparative Criminal Justice, which looks at global criminal justice systems. The Researching Criminology module prepares students for independent research, honing skills necessary for their final-year dissertation.In Year 3, students complete a Dissertation (Criminology), where they conduct independent research on a topic of their choice, integrating everything they've learned. The Criminal Justice and Human Rights module examines the intersection of human rights and criminal justice, exploring international standards and practices, while Contemporary Criminologies delves into emerging criminological theories and debates, preparing students to engage with current issues in the field.
