COURSE CURRICULUM

Year 1: In the first year, you'll gain foundational knowledge in renewable energy technologies, programming, and analogue systems. The Energy Conversion and Storage Technology module (20 credits) examines innovative solutions to sustainability challenges, focusing on technologies such as batteries, water-electrolysis, and solar cells, and their potential contributions to a smart grid. In the Introduction to Algorithms and Programming module (20 credits), you'll develop key programming skills, learning to apply coding principles to solve engineering problems. The Introduction to Analogue Circuits module (20 credits) helps you understand the fundamentals of analogue electronics, with practical projects that build your skills in circuit design and testing. The Introduction to Energy Systems module (20 credits) focuses on energy generation and conversion, including fossil fuels and renewable sources, along with the social and environmental impacts of energy systems. In the Mathematical Principles module (20 credits), you'll use algebra, calculus, and trigonometry to solve engineering problems. The Principles of Digital Systems module (20 credits) covers core digital concepts such as Boolean algebra, logic systems, and microcontroller architecture, preparing you for more advanced digital system studies.Year 2: The second year focuses on applying theoretical knowledge to real-world engineering challenges. The Group Design Project module (20 credits) involves working as a team to design a product, considering economic, social, and sustainability aspects. In the Solar Energy Systems module (20 credits), you'll explore photovoltaic and thermal solar technologies, learning to evaluate their efficiency and determine their applications. The Innovation and Enterprise module (20 credits) teaches you how to develop and pitch an innovative start-up idea, covering aspects like business plans, funding, and regulations. The Low Carbon Heating Systems module (20 credits) involves analysing sustainable heating technologies such as heat pumps and biomass boilers, with a focus on thermodynamics and system efficiency.Year 3: In the final year, you'll undertake an individual research project, diving into an area of personal interest. The Individual Project module (40 credits) allows you to develop an in-depth investigation into a specific engineering challenge with the guidance of an expert supervisor. In the Energy Efficient Buildings module (20 credits), you'll focus on designing zero-carbon buildings, applying renewable energy, smart technology, and dynamic pricing to reduce energy consumption. The Wind Energy module (20 credits) covers turbine technology and grid integration, with an emphasis on the economic and environmental impact of wind energy. The Bio Energy With CO2 Capturing module (20 credits) examines technologies that convert biomass and waste into renewable energy, with a focus on CO2 capture systems. Lastly, the Sustainable Transport Systems module (20 credits) looks at decarbonisation in the transport sector, exploring technologies like batteries and hydrogen fuel cells, and evaluating their potential for sustainable mobility solutions.
