COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1, the Investigating Language Practices module gives you the opportunity to design and carry out a mini research project on real-world language use. You'll gain hands-on experience with collecting, analyzing, and presenting language data, while learning to use university resources and understanding processes like ethics approval and referencing. This module also helps you develop professional skills such as teamwork, time management, and resilience, setting you on the path to becoming an independent researcher. The Language, Learning and Teaching module introduces language teaching methodologies and allows you to reflect on your own language learning experiences. You'll analyze the elements of English grammar, and also learn an unfamiliar language, comparing it with languages you already know. The Nation, Language and Identity module delves into the concept of the nation, examining how national identity is shaped and how language plays a critical role in this process, especially in regions where French, German, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese are spoken. In Year 2, there is an optional module. Year 3 offers a transformative Study Abroad experience, where you’ll immerse yourself in a country where your chosen language is spoken, allowing you to improve your language skills, gain cross-cultural understanding, and build self-confidence. This international experience will provide fresh perspectives, enhancing your subject knowledge and preparing you for future career steps. In Year 4, there is another optional module to further tailor your learning experience.
