COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year, students are introduced to core concepts that will shape their understanding of political science, international relations, and global development. The "Critical Thinking and Professional Identity" module equips students with essential academic and professional skills, focusing on writing, research, public speaking, and networking. This module is fundamental for academic success, allowing students to develop the ability to analyze sources and build coherent arguments. "Global Development" focuses on international development, exploring how various organizations aim to reduce inequality and conflict globally. It also highlights the relationship between development practices and global capitalism. The "Key Themes in International Relations" module provides a comprehensive introduction to IR, covering themes such as war, peace, sovereignty, and diplomacy, and encourages critical thinking about the global issues shaping today’s world. The "Political Thought" module delves into key political theories, helping students understand the philosophical debates about human nature, rights, liberty, justice, and governance. Lastly, "The Making of the Global South" module focuses on the historical and social factors that have shaped the Global South and its ongoing struggles with development challenges, offering a critical analysis of the dynamics between the Global North and South.In the second year, modules like "International Thought" and "Bending the Truth A Little? Researching Politics and International Relations" deepen students' understanding of theoretical frameworks and research methodologies within international relations. These modules help students evaluate global affairs critically and enhance their research skills. The "Geopolitics and Geo-Economics of Africa" module examines Africa's role in global power structures, highlighting the continent’s strategic significance and its ongoing development challenges.In the third year, the focus shifts to specialized topics such as "Rethinking Aid and Development," which critiques the history and effectiveness of foreign aid, and "Security Challenges in the Twenty-First Century," where students examine new security threats and contemporary modes of conflict. These modules encourage students to critically engage with the practical and theoretical aspects of development and security, equipping them with the tools needed to navigate complex global issues.
