COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year, students are introduced to essential concepts in political science, global development, international relations, and political thought. The "Critical Thinking and Professional Identity" module focuses on developing key academic and professional skills, including writing, research, and public speaking. This helps students prepare for future success in their degree and career. The "Global Development" module explores international development, examining the roles of various organizations in reducing inequality and conflict worldwide. It places these efforts within the context of global capitalism, enabling students to critically assess development strategies. The "Key Themes in International Relations" module offers an introduction to the field of IR, focusing on significant global issues such as war, security, diplomacy, and climate change. Students will develop a comprehensive understanding of the historical and contemporary dimensions of international relations. Additionally, the "Political Thought" module delves into the key debates of political theory, examining issues like human nature, liberty, justice, and the authority of the state. Finally, "The Making of the Global South" addresses the historical and contemporary dynamics that define the Global South, exploring development challenges in regions such as Africa, South Asia, and Latin America, as well as their impacts on the Global North.In the second year, modules such as "International Thought" and "Bending the Truth A Little? Researching Politics and International Relations" build on these foundations by focusing on the theoretical approaches within International Relations and the skills needed to evaluate competing truth claims and conduct research in global politics. Students gain critical analytical tools to navigate contemporary political issues.The third year introduces specialized topics like "Security Challenges in the Twenty-First Century," where students explore global security issues, and "Empires and Identities" or "Societies in Revolution," where they engage with historical topics such as the impact of empires, identity formation, and revolutionary movements. These modules allow students to choose specific historical events or themes for in-depth study, fostering a deeper understanding of global and historical transformations.
