COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1, students will be introduced to a range of stimulating modules that will lay the foundation for their academic journey. The Body Politics module (40 credits) encourages students to explore the representations of the body in literature and visual culture. By examining how ideas of gender, race, and sexuality shape perceptions of the body, students will understand the body as a site of both conformity and resistance. They will also engage with key theoretical approaches like gender theory and posthumanism. The Global Identities module (20 credits) expands the lens to view literature from a global perspective. Students will analyze texts that tackle issues such as power, ethnicity, and gender, gaining insight into the ways books shape culture and identity across the world. The Popular Culture module (20 credits) challenges students to think critically about societal values and the debates surrounding "high" and "low" culture. Through the analysis of key texts, students will develop critical thinking skills and gain an understanding of the cultural functions of popular fictions. In The Short Story: Murder, Madness, and Experimentation (20 credits), students will study various forms of short fiction, from traditional realist stories to more experimental ones. This module introduces students to narrative theory, helping them develop their own literary creativity. The Unpacking Texts module (20 credits) introduces students to critical theory, fostering a deeper understanding of how texts can be interpreted and analyzed in increasingly complex ways.Year 2 builds upon these foundations with modules such as Literary Prizes and Public Acclaim (20 credits), where students will analyze award-winning novels and understand the criteria behind literary awards. Research in Practice (20 credits) prepares students for their dissertation, guiding them through the research process and refining their academic skills. These modules will enhance both literary analysis and professional development, ensuring that students are well-equipped for their final year.
