COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1, students begin by exploring the foundational aspects of linguistics. The How Language Works (20 credits) module provides an introduction to key linguistic concepts such as phonetics, morphology, and syntax through interactive seminars and hands-on analysis. Students also gain practical skills in transcribing speech, analyzing meaning in texts, and identifying language features. The Investigating Language Practices (40 credits) module allows students to design and execute a mini research project, enhancing their understanding of real-world language use. This hands-on project fosters important research skills like data collection, analysis, and presentation. The Language, Learning and Teaching (20 credits) module introduces students to language teaching methodologies and encourages reflection on personal language learning experiences. The Language, Society and Mind: An Introduction to Linguistics (20 credits) module examines how language shapes thought and explores topics such as psycholinguistics, language acquisition, and social variation. Finally, the Working with Texts (20 credits) module teaches students to analyze texts across various media, focusing on how language constructs meaning and shapes social interaction.In Year 2, the focus shifts to more advanced concepts in linguistics. English Forms and Functions (20 credits) explores the relationship between grammatical structures and their social functions in everyday language. The Meaning in English (20 credits) module deepens students’ understanding of semantics and pragmatics, examining how meaning is constructed in both spoken and written forms. Students continue to build their analytical skills and stay updated on developments such as social media discourse, honing their expertise in linguistic analysis.In Year 3, students can choose from a range of optional modules to specialize in their areas of interest within linguistics.
