COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1, students begin by exploring the historical and cultural foundations of European society. The Beliefs, Communities, and Conflict: Europe 1400-1750 (20 credits) module examines the intersection of religion, politics, and social change in early modern Europe. Body Politics (40 credits) explores representations of the body in literature and visual culture, analyzing its connection to gender, race, and power. Global Identities (20 credits) introduces students to the complexities of identity formation in a global context, examining the historical roots of contemporary global issues. Finally, Traces of the Past: Exploring Lives Through Sources (40 credits) focuses on the methods of historical research, guiding students in analyzing primary sources to uncover the lives and experiences of past individuals.In Year 2, the focus broadens, offering a deeper dive into cultural and historical developments. Age of Crisis: European Culture in the Twentieth Century (20 credits) investigates the political and cultural upheavals in Europe during the 20th century. Bloody Shakespeare (20 credits) explores Shakespeare's works in relation to themes of violence and conflict. The Crime Writing (20 credits) module studies the genre's evolution and its societal implications. Students also choose between Debating the Past (History) or Literary Prizes and Public Acclaim (English) (20 credits), as well as between Research in Practice (English Literature) or Working with the Past (History) (20 credits). The year also includes thematic studies in Empire and Its Afterlives (20 credits), Space, Place and Being (20 credits), and The Hidden Lives of Things (20 credits).Year 3 culminates with a Dissertation/Major Project (40 credits), allowing students to conduct in-depth research on a topic of their choice. Optional modules in this final year include specialized topics such as Consuming Fictions (20 credits), Holocaust Literatures (20 credits), Magical Realism (20 credits), and others, offering opportunities for focused study in areas like popular culture, revolution, and identity.
