The Body Politics module (40 credits) offers an in-depth exploration of how the body is represented in literature and visual culture, focusing on cultural constructions of gender, race, and sexuality. Students analyze the body as a site of conformity and resistance, drawing on theoretical approaches like gender theory and posthumanism. Telling Tales (20 credits) introduces students to ancient storytelling traditions such as epic poetry and folk ballads, while encouraging creative adaptation of these classic forms into modern short fiction. In The Short Story: Murder, Madness, and Experimentation (20 credits), students engage with short fiction in various styles, from traditional realism to experimental forms like flash fiction. They apply narrative theory to understand story construction and ignite their literary creativity. Tips, Tricks, Techniques (20 credits) equips students with the critical thinking and writing strategies necessary for university-level writing. Through studying renowned authors, students hone their own unique writing voice. The True Stories module (20 credits) delves into creative nonfiction, encouraging introspective writing and the exploration of personal identity. Students craft memoirs and autobiographical works while receiving peer feedback to refine their techniques.In Year 2, Literary Prizes and Public Acclaim (20 credits) provides insight into the world of literary awards, where students analyze and debate the criteria used in prestigious prizes like the Booker Prize. This module also introduces students to the commercial side of literary publishing. Year 3 offers optional modules that build on these foundational skills, preparing students for advanced literary study and professional writing careers.
