COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of this program, students will build a strong foundation in understanding the key elements of child development and early childhood education. The "Becoming a Researcher" module introduces students to the principles of ethical research, particularly when working with children and young people, and helps them develop a research proposal. The "Child and Youth Development" module explores the various theories and stages of physical, cognitive, social, and emotional growth in children, providing students with crucial knowledge to support child development. The "Health and Wellbeing of the Child and Young Person" module focuses on understanding the factors that influence children's health and wellbeing, including the impact of government policies and social issues, while addressing challenges like those posed by the pandemic. In "Perspectives of Early Childhood Education," students gain insights into the history and theory behind modern educational practices, with a hands-on approach that includes a 25-day placement. The "Understanding Childhoods" module introduces core concepts of childhood studies, including safeguarding, anti-discriminatory practices, and children's literature. This year also emphasizes the development of practical skills, academic writing, and teamwork through the creation of an ePortfolio.In the second year, students build on this knowledge with modules like "Just Playing?" which examines the importance of play in early childhood development. "Professional Practice in Early Childhood Education and Care" allows students to gain practical experience and reflect on their career goals. "Global Childhoods" explores childhood experiences across the world, while "Research with Children and Young People" teaches students how to conduct ethical research with children, equipping them with essential skills for future research projects.
