The Childhood and Youth Studies program provides a comprehensive exploration of child development, social psychology, and practical skills for working with children and young people.In Year 1, you begin by learning essential research skills in Becoming a Researcher, focusing on ethical practices in community research. The Child and Youth Development module provides foundational knowledge of physical, cognitive, and emotional growth, while Educational Contexts delves into the historical development of education. Introduction to Social Psychology explores human behavior in groups and society, and Understanding Childhoods covers safeguarding, children's literature, and anti-discriminatory practices.Year 2 emphasizes practical experience with the Professional Practice with Children and Young People placement, helping you apply theory in real-world educational or community settings. The Psychological Science module covers cognitive and developmental psychology, while Strategies for Social Change explores the role of youth in social change and activism. Children’s Social Minds focuses on understanding how social factors influence children’s identities and behaviors. Research with Children and Young People provides the skills to design and carry out ethical research involving children.Year 3 focuses on applying psychological theory in real-world scenarios with Psychology in Practice, covering techniques like cognitive behavioral therapy and counseling. The Supporting Children and Young People's Mental Health module focuses on supporting children with mental health difficulties, equipping you with the tools to address complex developmental challenges in various settings.
