ABOUT UNIVERSITY
The University of Wolverhampton is a public university based in Wolverhampton, England, with campuses spread across the West Midlands, Shropshire and Staffordshire. Its origins date back to 1827 with the founding of the Wolverhampton Tradesmen’s and Mechanics’ Institute, which aimed to provide technical and practical education to the local community. During the nineteenth century, the growth of the Wolverhampton Free Library and the expansion of evening classes in technical, scientific and commercial subjects helped shape the institution’s academic foundations. In 1926, these developments culminated in the formation of the Wolverhampton and Staffordshire Technical College, with Prince George, Duke of Kent, laying the foundation stone for new buildings in 1931. The college expanded steadily through the mid-twentieth century, introducing new disciplines such as music and applied sciences and gaining a strong reputation for technical education and research. A notable milestone occurred in 1957 with the arrival of the WITCH computer, now recognised as the world’s oldest original functioning electronic stored-program computer, highlighting the institution’s early engagement with computing technology. By the 1960s, the college had begun offering degree-level education in arts, humanities, economics and computer technology, reflecting the broader expansion of higher education in the UK. In parallel, the Wolverhampton School of Art, founded in 1851, developed into a significant centre for art and design education. In 1969, the Wolverhampton College of Technology merged with the College of Art to form The Polytechnic, Wolverhampton, later renamed Wolverhampton Polytechnic. Further growth followed through mergers with teacher training colleges and the expansion of additional campuses, including Walsall. In 1992, under national higher education reforms, the polytechnic was granted university status and became the University of Wolverhampton. Today, the university offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across multiple faculties and continues to build on its long tradition of applied learning, technical innovation and regional engagement.
