COURSE CURRICULUM

The PGCE Secondary Humanities program in Religious Education with History at the University of Winchester combines academic study with practical teaching experience to prepare trainees for a successful career in education. The program is structured around core modules including Teachers and Education, Curriculum Concepts and Contexts, and Pupils, Inclusion and Diversity, which provide essential knowledge in pedagogy, curriculum planning, and inclusive teaching practices. A central element is the school-based professional placement, where students are supported and guided by a teacher mentor. During this placement, trainees become familiar with school and classroom policies, plan and deliver lessons to groups and whole classes, and establish positive learning environments. They progressively take on full-class teaching responsibilities while refining behaviour management and assessment strategies. Trainees engage in continuous reflective practice, collecting evidence and evaluating their development to improve their teaching skills. The program also incorporates ITAP sequences, linking theory to practical classroom experience and supporting professional growth. By completing this program, students develop the confidence, creativity, and critical reflection necessary to become effective educators who can inspire and support the learning and development of their pupils while contributing positively to the school community.
