COURSE CURRICULUM

The PGCE Secondary Humanities program in History with Religious Education at the University of Winchester offers a comprehensive and supportive pathway for aspiring teachers to develop their professional expertise and subject knowledge. The program combines academic study with extensive hands-on experience in schools to ensure trainees are well-prepared for the classroom. Core modules such as Teachers and Education, Curriculum Concepts and Contexts, and Pupils, Inclusion and Diversity provide students with a strong foundation in pedagogy, curriculum design, and strategies for inclusive teaching. A central element of the course is the school-based professional placement, during which trainees are guided and supported by experienced teacher mentors. Students become familiar with school and classroom policies, gradually taking on greater responsibility by planning and delivering lessons to groups and whole classes. Emphasis is placed on clear explanation, effective modelling, and the creation of positive learning environments. Trainees develop essential skills in behaviour management, assessment, and reflective practice, continually evaluating their progress and gathering evidence of professional growth. ITAP sequences further integrate theoretical understanding with practical teaching, allowing students to refine their approaches and adapt to real classroom contexts. By the end of the program, trainees are equipped to be confident, innovative, and reflective educators capable of making a meaningful impact on pupils’ learning and development.
