COURSE CURRICULUM

The PGCE Secondary Humanities program in History with Geography offers a comprehensive blend of academic study and practical teaching experience designed to prepare trainees for effective classroom practice. Core modules, including Teachers and Education, Curriculum Concepts and Contexts, and Pupils, Inclusion and Diversity, provide students with a strong foundation in educational theory, curriculum design, and strategies for supporting learners with diverse needs. Central to the program is the school-based professional placement, where students receive guidance and support from an experienced teacher mentor. During this placement, trainees become familiar with classroom and school policies, plan and deliver lessons to both small groups and entire classes, and focus on explaining subject content clearly, modelling effective teaching methods, and establishing positive learning environments. As trainees progress, they take on full-class teaching responsibilities, developing and refining essential skills in behaviour management, lesson assessment, and classroom leadership. Reflective practice is embedded throughout the placement, encouraging students to collect evidence, evaluate their teaching strategies, and record their personal and professional growth. Engagement with ITAP sequences further integrates theoretical knowledge with practical application. Overall, the program equips students with the confidence, pedagogical expertise, and practical experience required to make a meaningful impact on pupils’ learning while fostering ongoing professional development and reflective teaching practice.
