COURSE CURRICULUM

The PGCE Primary with Mathematics program combines academic study with practical teaching experience to prepare students for a career in primary education, with a focus on mathematics. Core modules include Teachers and Education, Curriculum Concepts and Contexts, and Pupils, Inclusion and Diversity, each designed to build knowledge of educational theory, curriculum development, and strategies to support diverse learners. Central to the program is the professional school-based placement, where students work closely with experienced teacher mentors. During these placements, trainees become familiar with classroom and school policies, plan and deliver lessons to small groups and eventually to whole classes, and develop skills in explaining and modelling concepts effectively. Emphasis is placed on creating positive learning environments, managing behaviour, and assessing pupil progress. Students engage in continual reflective practice, collecting evidence of their teaching and evaluating their professional growth. They also participate in ITAP sequences, which support structured lesson planning and teaching cycles. By integrating theoretical learning with hands-on experience, the program ensures that trainees develop both general teaching skills and mathematics-specific expertise. Graduates emerge as confident, reflective, and adaptable practitioners, equipped to foster student learning, address individual needs, and contribute meaningfully to the school community.
