COURSE CURRICULUM

The PGCE Primary 5-11 program incorporates both academic study and practical school-based experience to prepare trainees for a career in teaching. Core modules include Teachers and Education, Curriculum Concepts and Contexts, and Pupils, Inclusion and Diversity, each designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of educational theory, curriculum design, and strategies for supporting diverse learners. A key component of the program is the professional placement, where students work under the guidance of an experienced teacher mentor within a school setting. During this placement, trainees become familiar with class and school policies, plan and deliver lessons to small groups and eventually to the whole class, while developing skills in explaining and modelling content, establishing positive learning environments, and managing behaviour effectively. Trainees also focus on assessment strategies, continually reflecting on their practice and recording evidence of their professional development. Engagement with ITAP sequences allows students to consolidate their understanding of teaching approaches, classroom management, and inclusive education. By integrating theoretical study with practical experience, the program ensures that trainees develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence required to become competent, reflective, and adaptable teachers capable of fostering pupil growth and creating effective and supportive learning environments across the 5 to 11 age range.
