COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Midwifery program is structured to progressively develop the knowledge, skills, and professional competence required to become a safe and effective midwife. In the first year, students focus on the foundations of midwifery practice, exploring personalised care throughout the pregnancy journey, birth, and the postnatal period, while developing essential practical skills and understanding the role of the professional midwife. Year two builds on this foundation, with a focus on enhanced and complex midwifery care, professional development, and the consolidation of practical skills. Students gain experience in responding to more challenging clinical situations, supporting diverse populations, and applying evidence-based approaches to care. In the final year, the emphasis shifts to preparing students for autonomous practice, equipping them with the expertise to manage perinatal emergencies, monitor deterioration, and lead improvements in care delivery. Advanced skills development ensures graduates are competent, confident, and ready to operate independently within multidisciplinary teams. Throughout the program, practical placements complement academic learning, allowing students to apply theory in real-world settings, reflect on their practice, and develop professional resilience. Completion of the program leads to eligibility for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, enabling graduates to practice as qualified midwives and make a meaningful contribution to maternal and neonatal health.
