COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Archaeology degree provides a comprehensive and science-based exploration of past human societies, combining theoretical understanding with practical and analytical skills. In the first year, students gain a foundation in the archaeology of past societies and cultures, learning core methods, approaches, and artefact analysis, alongside practical training in archaeological techniques and essential research skills. This equips students with the tools to investigate and interpret material evidence systematically. In the second year, the focus shifts to fieldwork and post-fieldwork techniques, allowing students to apply their knowledge in real-world settings, while engaging with advanced theory and research in archaeology. Students also study climate and landscape change, understanding the environmental contexts in which past human societies developed, and have the opportunity to select optional modules to tailor their learning. The final year emphasizes independent research through an extended study, enabling students to conduct original investigations and develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills. Additionally, students explore the processes and interpretation of archaeology in relation to heritage, examining how knowledge of the past is communicated and preserved. By combining scientific methodology, fieldwork, and research, graduates are well-prepared for careers in archaeology, heritage management, research, and related disciplines.
