COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Modern History program offers students an in-depth exploration of global and national historical developments from the early modern period to the contemporary world, providing both broad context and specialized knowledge. In the first year, students build a solid foundation through core modules covering case studies in history, global histories, and early and modern worlds, enabling them to understand the key social, political, and cultural transformations over time. The second year develops practical and analytical skills through modules on history in practice, thematic studies, and sources in history, alongside optional projects such as exploring past localities, group-led initiatives, field trips, or work placements that foster independent research and collaborative skills. A full-year study abroad option further enhances global perspectives and intercultural understanding. In the final year, students undertake a dissertation and a depth study in history, supported by optional modules that allow critical engagement with comparative and contested histories, heritage, the representation of the past in media, and contemporary political contexts such as Russian foreign policy. The program emphasizes independent research, critical thinking, and practical application, preparing graduates for careers in history, education, heritage, public engagement, media, and further academic study while equipping them with transferable analytical, communication, and project management skills.
