COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) History and Politics degree provides a comprehensive interdisciplinary study of historical and political processes, allowing students to critically explore how societies, governance, and political systems have developed over time. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge in case studies of history, modern global developments, political philosophy, international relations, and security, providing a broad understanding of historical and political contexts. The second year deepens this knowledge through practical historical research, thematic studies in history, and political leadership, while optional modules allow students to specialise in areas such as Middle Eastern politics, work placements, liberty and extremism, or gender and sexuality in political contexts. In the final year, students undertake a dissertation, explore in-depth historical studies, and examine global development and resource competition, with optional modules focusing on heritage, the representation of history on screen, and foreign policy analyses of major powers like Russia and the United States. The degree encourages critical thinking, analytical skills, and the ability to assess complex socio-political issues, blending historical insight with contemporary political understanding. Graduates are equipped for careers in government, international organisations, policy analysis, journalism, education, and research, providing the skills to engage with historical and political challenges in a global context.
