COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) History and Archaeology degree combines historical study with archaeological practice, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of past societies. In the first year, students engage with foundational modules including case studies in history, global histories, and the archaeology of past societies and cultures, alongside methods, approaches, and artefact analysis. This grounding allows students to explore how historical and material evidence can be used to reconstruct the lives, beliefs, and social structures of past communities. In the second year, the focus shifts to applied skills with modules such as history in practice, sources in history, and archaeological fieldwork and post-fieldwork techniques, enabling students to develop practical experience in research, excavation, and analysis. These modules emphasize the interpretation of both textual and material evidence and the development of critical thinking skills necessary for historical inquiry. In the final year, students undertake a depth study in history and an extended independent study, allowing them to pursue a specialised topic of interest while demonstrating their ability to integrate historical knowledge and archaeological practice. The program cultivates research, analytical, and communication skills, preparing graduates for careers in heritage, museums, research, and further study in history, archaeology, and related interdisciplinary fields.
