COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) English Literature and Film program combines the study of literature and cinema, examining their distinct qualities and the ways they intersect, particularly through adaptations and shared narratives. In Year 1, students build foundational skills with modules such as Introduction to Film, Film Form, Narrative and History, Studying English Literature, and Critical Theory, developing analytical and interpretive abilities for both media. Year 2 explores more complex connections between text and screen through modules such as Reframing Film, Romanticism, and Modern to Postmodern, with optional modules allowing specialisation in areas like British and European Cinema or Hollywood, examining historical, cultural, industrial, and ideological contexts. In Year 3, students complete an Extended Independent Study – English and Film Dissertation, alongside modules such as Fantasy and Science Fiction, offering the opportunity to investigate specialised topics in depth. Optional modules further enable students to explore genres, styles, and historical periods, including Animation, Gothic and Horror Film, Literature and Film, or Consuming Pleasures, which considers the intersection of literature, consumer culture, and erotics. The program develops critical thinking, research, and creative interpretation skills, encouraging students to analyse narrative, form, and representation across multiple contexts. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in film, media, publishing, cultural management, education, or postgraduate study in literature, film, or media studies.
