COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Criminology with Sociology degree offers a comprehensive and interdisciplinary curriculum that develops understanding of crime, justice, and society. In Year 1, students build foundational knowledge through modules such as Introduction to Criminology, Police and Police Work, Victimology, Law, Government and Policy, and Issues and Debates in Social Policy. They also explore sociological perspectives through modules including The Sociological Imagination, Understanding the Family and Intimate Relationships, Identity, Equality and Diversity, and Criminological Identities and Contemporary Issues. Year 2 advances analytical and research skills through Penology and a choice between Criminological Research or Applied Research Skills, alongside a wide selection of optional modules such as Comparative Criminal Justice, Violent Crime, Gender and Sexualities, Digital Crime and Investigation, Young People, Deviance and Crime, and Volunteering opportunities. These modules allow students to tailor the degree to their interests and career ambitions. In Year 3, students complete either a Dissertation in Sociology or an Extended Independent Study in Criminology and choose from further specialist modules including Miscarriages of Justice, Criminal Bodies, Sport and Crime, Criminological Psychology, Modern Slavery, Human Rights and Social Activism, or Desistance from Crime. The program builds critical thinking, research capability, and practical understanding of real-world issues, preparing students for careers in criminal justice, community services, public policy, policing, youth work, probation, or postgraduate study.
