COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Creative Writing program provides a progressive and skills-focused structure that develops students from foundational writing techniques to advanced creative practice and professional readiness. In Year 1, students build core skills through modules such as Workshop 1 – The Writer’s Toolkit, The Art of Nonfiction, Creativity, Criticality and Culture, and Writing for Performance, exploring diverse forms and strengthening confidence in experimentation and expression. Year 2 deepens creative craft with modules including Workshop 2 – Being A Writer, Nonfiction 2 – Making it Real, and Strange Fiction, encouraging students to refine voice, narrative techniques, and genre awareness. Students also choose optional modules that allow for personal interests, including Writing for Young People or Writing for Comics and Graphic Novels in the first semester, and Writing Historical Fiction or Composing Song Lyrics in the second semester. These options cultivate specialised skills and expand understanding of audiences, form, and industry contexts. In Year 3, students focus on professional-level work through the Extended Creative Piece and Workshop 3 – Ideas in Action, providing space to develop a substantial independent project and prepare for publication or future creative careers. Overall, the course supports creative growth, critical reflection, and practical application, equipping graduates with strong writing portfolios and versatile industry skills.
