COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Creative Writing and English Literature degree offers a balanced blend of literary study and creative practice, progressing from core skills in reading, writing, and critical analysis to advanced independent work. In Year 1, students build strong foundations through modules such as Workshop 1 – The Writer’s Toolkit, The Art of Nonfiction, Studying English Literature, and Critical Theory, helping them explore writing techniques while developing academic approaches to literature. Year 2 strengthens creative craft through Workshop 2 – Being a Writer and Nonfiction 2 – Making it Real, alongside Modern to Postmodern, which examines literature from the twentieth century onward. Students can personalise their studies through optional modules including Global Gothic or Children’s Literature and Young Adult Fiction, as well as Literature and the Body or Victorian Literature, enabling exploration of specific genres and themes. In Year 3, the focus shifts to advanced independent work through the Creative & Critical Extended Study, offering opportunities to develop substantial creative or research projects. Students can further specialise with options such as Fantasy and Science Fictions, Literature and Film, Globalisation and Contemporary Fiction, Creative Teaching for Creative Writing, Women’s Writing in the Long Eighteenth Century, or Writing for Games. The program develops critical thinking, creativity, research skills, and professional communication while supporting career paths in writing, publishing, teaching, media, and cultural industries.
