COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Classical Studies program offers a structured and immersive journey through the ancient Greek and Roman worlds, combining historical study, literary analysis, archaeology, and cultural interpretation. In Year 1, students are introduced to the foundations of classical civilisation through modules such as Exploring Classical History and Culture, Responding to Classical Myth and Literature, Monuments, Myths and the Mind: (Re)constructing Life in the Classical World, and a Case Study in History. These provide insight into daily life, mythology, society, and representation in the classical past. Year 2 deepens subject knowledge through Classical Studies: Theories, Methods, and Approaches, From Homer to Alexander, and The Roman Republic, exploring political and cultural developments from early Greece through the rise of Rome. Students can also select optional modules such as The Culture of Neoclassicism, museum-focused study, a group project, or a work placement to gain professional experience. In Year 3, students complete a Dissertation and undertake specialist modules like Depth Study in History and Popular Culture in the Classical World. Additional options such as Troy in the Ancient Imagination, Death and Ritual in the Ancient World, or heritage-focused modules allow for academic and vocational exploration. The program builds valuable skills in research, interpretation, critical thinking, and communication that prepare graduates for varied careers in education, heritage, museums, culture, media, or further study.
