COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Ancient, Classical and Medieval Studies degree is structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of past societies through both historical and archaeological perspectives. In the first year, students explore the archaeology of past societies and cultures, gaining practical knowledge of methods, approaches, and artefact analysis, alongside foundational historical case studies and an introduction to medieval worlds. This combination allows students to develop critical skills in interpreting both material and textual evidence. The second year builds on these foundations with modules focusing on theory and research in archaeology, the archaeology of Britain, and historical source analysis, enabling students to critically evaluate evidence and develop research techniques applicable to complex historical questions. Optional modules offer the opportunity to specialise in areas of personal or professional interest, further enhancing expertise. In the third year, students consolidate their learning through an extended independent study, allowing them to pursue in-depth research projects that integrate archaeological and historical approaches. Additionally, a depth study in history provides the chance to engage with a specific historical period or theme in detail. The degree encourages analytical thinking, research proficiency, and interdisciplinary understanding, equipping graduates with the skills to pursue careers in heritage, education, research, or related cultural sectors, while fostering a thorough appreciation of the ancient, classical, and medieval worlds.
