ABOUT UNIVERSITY
The University of Winchester is a public research university located in Winchester, Hampshire, England, with origins dating back to 1840 when the Winchester Diocesan Training School was established to train elementary schoolmasters. Initially small and situated in a house on St Swithun Street, the school moved to Wolvesey, the Bishop’s Palace, in 1847, becoming Winchester Training College. Following a cholera outbreak, a new building was established in 1862 on land granted by Winchester Cathedral, later renamed King Alfred’s College in 1928. Originally a male-only institution, the college began admitting women in 1960 and gradually expanded its academic offerings beyond teacher training. Through partnerships with the University of Southampton and approval from the Council for National Academic Awards, King Alfred’s College introduced interdisciplinary undergraduate programs in fields such as History, English with Drama, Archaeology, and American Studies, as well as postgraduate degrees including the MEd and various Masters programs. With changes in UK higher education policy in the 1990s, the college aimed to achieve university status, acquiring Taught Degree Awarding Powers in 2003 and changing its name to University College Winchester in 2004. In 2005, it was granted full university status, and by 2008 it received the authority to award research degrees. Since 2006, under Vice-Chancellor Professor Joy Carter, the university has seen significant development, including the opening of the University Centre in 2007 and the St Alphege Learning and Teaching Building in 2013, both recognized for architectural excellence. The Winchester Sports Stadium, featuring Olympic-standard facilities, opened in 2008. More recently, expansion of the West Downs campus added new lecture and exhibition spaces, completed in 2020. The university, a member of The Cathedrals Group, holds its graduation ceremonies in Winchester Cathedral, and its graduates may use the post-nominals Winton, derived from the Latin Wintoniensis, meaning “of Winchester.”
